Can anyone help?
I have an original Mac II (68020 CPU). Lately, when I press the
startup key on the keyboard, it doesn't start up the first time.
Just today, it has now completely "died". The startup key does nothing.
Also, the power on/off key in the back does nothing.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the old Mac II had
some kind of battery that powered the startup procedure. Could
this battery have died on me?
(By the way, I've already tried swapping keyboards, ADB cables,
power cords, etc)

Hey NetFolks,
I have a department that is interested in buying a 600 dpi 11x17 laser
printer (preferably at an educational discount). I am looking for suggestions
on brand, model, and where to buy. Built-in localtalk, 8MB+ RAM, built-in
fonts, and scsi port (for font storage) are needed as well.
I know many new models became available in the past few months at very nice
prices - If anyone has had any experience with specific ones, I'll take those
comments too.
Thanks a bunch.

causing the problem, could it be the Radius Card? Could it be the

troubles and I use a lot of INITS and CPs.

Subject: Background printing of postscript files
In V11-2, Theodore Lee <tmplee@TIS.COM> raises an
interesting question. How does one take a Postscript
File and print it in the background? The cleverest
approach would be to drop it into the Print Monitor's
PrintMonitor Documents folder, whereupon Print Monitor
would see it and print it. Unfortunately, this doesn't
work. PrintMonitor starts up, but apparently can't deal
with a Postscript file sitting in the spool folder. Does
anyone know the format of documents in the PrintMonitor
Documents spool folder, and if it's possible to make
PrintMonitor deal with postscript docs there?

Subject: BBEdit 2.2 crashes when waking my PB160!
Has anyone else had this problem before I bug the author about it?
Here's the deal:
I launch BBEdit (doesn't matter if I have a doc open or not),
the PB goes to sleep after a few minutes of non-use, and if
BBEdit was the front application, when the PB wakes up, BBEdit crashes
with a "Type 1" Error. This is with or without any extensions.
If BBEdit is in the background, it seems to survive. Problem is, I'm trying
to use BBEdit as the editor on it, and I can't really predict when it will
go to sleep and put it in the background right before it goes to sleep
(which would keep it from sleeping, anyway)
Anyone else? Can someone try it on their machine?

Subject: ethernet and SCSI
Pete Tamas asks:
Is ethernet faster than scsi? In other words, would a scsi device
which provides ethernet be slower than an ethernet card?
These are actually two separate questions, not one question rephrased.
First, "Is ethernet faster than SCSI?"
Ethernet's bandwidth is 10MB/sec, which is the same as 8-bit SCSI with
the synchronous option and fast transfer rates. So, you might think
they're the same.
The Mac only does asynchronous SCSI, though, and without DMA, so
you'll probably see less than 2MB/sec though a Mac's SCSI port. That
makes ethernet look faster.
Ethernet is designed as a shared-access medium, however, and
individual devices don't sustain anywhere near the full bandwidth.
Getting a few hundred KB/sec through a single device is pretty good.
That makes SCSI look faster.
So the real answer is, "It all depends."
Second, "Would a SCSI device which provides ethernet be slower than an
ethernet card?"
Adding intermediate interfaces always increases latency and often
reduces bandwidth. So, even if SCSI's transfer rates were vastly
higher than ethernet's, it's likely that a SCSI ethernet adapter won't
give the same performance as an internal ethernet card.
This doesn't dictate that a well-made SCSI ethernet card can't beat a
poorly designed internal card. Your best bet is to go read some
reviews.

David, we are in the same boat. I upgraded our LaserWriter IINT to a IIg
ethernettable printer (but budget an extra $100 or so for a transceiver
to connect the IIg's unFriendlyNet port to a standard ethernet connector)
but I couldn't see the money to upgrade our Personal LaserWriter NT. My
colleagues here convinced me to get Sonic's LaserBridge (about $100) to
link the localtalked Personal NT to the other Macs on ethernet. I've not
been disappointed. For the price of a transceiver, which I'd need anyway,
I get a software product that will let me have up to five localtalked
printers accessible to the ethertalked Macs. Granted, the host Mac must
be powered up for that localtalked printer to be seen, but that seems a
rather trivial cost.
Then you get to other-cpu stuff. I don't know. The DOS pukes (no offense)
in our office haven't done anything with ethernet. They had to hire a
stoont to install the cards so that merely having the cards didn't crash
their machines. They are currently congratulating themselves for having
overcome that hurdle and have no time to actually install, much less use,
ethernet software. I understand that the MS/DOS software includes remote
printing to any device with an IP address. That'd let the IIg be used.
I've no idea if/whether the LaserBridged Personal NT can be used by those
otherwise fine folk.
There's a for sure solution for your Mac types. I'd be interested in
learning of solutions for your other-cpu pukes (no offense).

Subject: Ethernet vs. SCSI (r)
Pete Tamas writes:
>Is ethernet faster than scsi? In other words, would a scsi device which
>provides ethernet be slower than an ethernet card?
I'm not exactly sure what you mean here. If you are asking which protocol
has higher sustained data transfer rates, then the answer is this: The
current generation of scsi _hard disks_ transfer data quite a bit faster
than ethernet can.
If you are asking whether an ethernet card works faster than an _external
scsi- based ethernet adapter_, the answer is a little complex:
In general, an external scsi device which provides ethernet services to
Macs with no expansion slots is slower than an ethernet card installed in a
Mac that does have expansion slots. Furthermore, performance is better for
ethernet cards that install in a processor direct slot than those that
install in a nubus slot.
Summary: An ethernet card in a processor direct slot works faster than an
ethernet card installed in a nubus slot, and any slot-based ethernet card
will work faster than a scsi-based ethernet device.
I hope I've answered your question.

I suggested this yesterday for someone else trying to rename their hard

will work enough to allow you to rename your hard drive as well as pasting
an icon on a hard drive that you couldn't paste to before. I'm not sure

make the Mac-X color window correspond to the 4Dwm window,

What am I doing wrong ?
BTW, the SGI Indigo is fantastic. I am surprised Apple hasn't sued

SX24-Z, using the MIPS 4000 chip running at 100 Mhz, is about x10
faster than the Quadra. I am using it with the new HP split-optic

HP Scanjet IIc comes with DeskScan IIc and DeskPaint programs. The hardware
is very good, expecially for OCR work because it uses HP's proprietary
AccuPage technology (useful only if you use an OCR program - such as
OmniPage or TypeReader - that supports it). The software is so-so,
certainly not as good as Ofoto, for example. DeskScan II is somewhat buggy
- it crashes a lot on my Mac (at least in 32-bit mode). On the other hand,
it's TWAIN-compatible so you can use it directly in one of the few
TWAIN-aware programs. I don't use DeskPaint at all (why bother when you
have Photoshop).

Subject: Impact Accelerator for LC (A)
A while ago - maybe a *long* while ago - someone asked about Extreme
Systems' Impact 32MHz '030 accelerator for the LC. I installed one
just before Xmas (I chose to narrow the perfomance gap btw my LC and
my Quadra rather than widen it by getting the Quadra Overdrive) and am
very happy with it. I got the version that comes with the 50Mhz FPU.
A sample of performance improvement: a standard takes over 10 minutes
to open a 1.5 meg Nisus file with graphics (Nisus is memory based
and the whole file has to be read in - when working at home I'd just
launch it and then go and have dinner). With the Impact running with
its external cache off, the file would open in about 6 minutes, and
with the external cache on, in under 4 (on the Quadra, it takes just
over 2 minutes).
I don't know how this compares to other LC accelerators. I was attracted
to the Impact by ES's ad which said that their power requirements
were within Apple's guidelines for the LC, which wasn't true for
universal accelerators that use adaptors for different machines (I
assume this was a dig at DayStar). The price was about $700; it's
about $600 without the FPU. However, the price should come down in
the near future, since DayStar has just cut its prices substantially
(in anticipation of Motorola dropping its).
One other thing. If you're thinking of buying the Impact for your LC
first open the LC box to check for a brown capacitor about the size of a
AAA battery near the SCSI port. It looks like it's attached to the

GCC Technologies' printers can have *two* paper trays loaded at once if you
buy a base unit that sits under their PLP II and BLP II printers. They
sell both legal and envelope trays. You can also manually feed paper

could be a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, or scatter diagram.
This seems like it would take a VERY sophisticated engine to achieve,

Subject: Macintosh Easy Open PR
Apple Ships Translation Manager Software to Developers
Macintosh Easy Open Simplifies Opening Files from Other Programs,
Platforms
CUPERTINO, California-January 4, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced the immediate availability of the Macintosh(r) Easy Open
Developer's Kit, an extension to System 7 and a translation manager
application programming interface (API) that provides Apple(r)
developers with the ability to enhance their applications or
translation systems to open and convert documents on Macintosh
personal computers, regardless of the availability of the
applications that created the files.
Designed to simplify access to information from a variety of
applications and across computing platforms, Macintosh Easy Open
makes opening and converting documents as easy as any other basic
Macintosh task. Once incorporated into third-party applications or
file translation systems, Macintosh Easy Open provides users with
options for accessing and manipulating documents quickly and easily.
Apple developers and their customers will appreciate that their
applications require no modifications to take advantage of most
Macintosh Easy Open features.
"Macintosh Easy Open is a powerful tool for getting to information
regardless of where it came from," said Charlie Oppenheimer, director
of marketing for Apple's Macintosh Software Architecture division.
"This new extension has what it takes to make the Macintosh the
preferred platform for sharing and exchanging data among disparate
applications and across multiple computing platforms. With products
like Macintosh Easy Open and our popular Macintosh PC Exchange, Apple
continues to provide customers with entirely new levels of
sophistication and ease of use in cross-platform computing."
Macintosh Easy Open provides users with a number of ways to access
Macintosh and non-Macintosh files. For example, when a user double-
clicks on a document that normally couldn't be opened because the
application that created it is unavailable, Macintosh Easy Open
intercedes and searches for applications and file translation systems
that are capable of opening the document, and lists them for the
user. Once the user selects an alternate application, Macintosh Easy
Open transparently manages the conversion of the document using the
application's internal translation capabilities or by using
specialized translation software.
"DataViz has adapted its entire MacLinkPlus library of file
translators, so Macintosh Easy Open will always offer users an
application to open `foreign' documents-whether they came from a
Macintosh or a personal computer," said Dick Fontana, president of
DataViz, Inc. of Trumbull, Conn. "Incorporating Macintosh Easy Open
into all our MacLinkPlus packages vastly improves the ability of our
customers to access information easily. We're proud to be among the
first to bring this exciting Macintosh technology to users."
By incorporating a standard API, Macintosh Easy Open provides Apple
developers with unique translation-management services. These
services can be integrated into their applications or translation
systems to provide transparent data conversion whenever opening,
copying, pasting, or publishing data from one format to another.
While Macintosh Easy Open does not perform any data translation
itself, it effectively manages access to third-party translation
systems and applications, which perform the actual translation.
Apple developers that are working on integrating Macintosh Easy Open
support into their products include the following: DataViz, Inc.,
makers of MacLinkPlus; Mastersoft, Inc. of Scottsdale, Ariz.,
makers of Word for Word/Macintosh; Equilibrium Technologies of
Sausalito, Calif., makers of DeBabelizer; Aladdin Systems, Inc. of
Watsonville, Calif., makers of StuffIt; and Kandu Software Corp. of
Arlington, Va., makers of CADMover. Apple also plans to incorporate
Macintosh Easy Open software into a number of current Apple software
products in 1993.
The Macintosh Easy Open extension also features added descriptive
information about documents, including non-Macintosh files, and color
icons in the Open and Save windows, making it easier for users to
determine document types at the Finder level.
The Macintosh Easy Open Document Converter, which comes with
Macintosh Easy Open, is a system utility that works with third-party
translators to allow users to convert a document from one file format
to another, without opening the document. With this feature, files
can be converted easily and quickly by simply dragging file icons to
the Document Converter icon.
Availability
The Macintosh Easy Open 1.0 Developer's Kit is available to
developers for $150 U.S. by contacting the Apple Programmers &
Developers Association (APDA(r)), Apple's mail-order service for

Subject: Software companies vs. European consumers
I agree wholeheartedly with Charles Schneider's comments on the mistreatment
of European consumers by US Software developers. My client is using a
particular product (which shall remain nameless -- sorry, but I have to
maintain good relations with the vendor!) and can get little or no help from
the vendor's European distributor. We report bugs, and they disappear off the
face of the earth, or at least off the face of Europe.
In desperation, I called one of my contacts at the vendor company in the US.
He was friendly and helpful, until he heard who the client was, then he became
formal and said that we would have to get support through the European
distributor.
By the way, this is a development environment product that runs $3,000 in the
US, but is well into five figures (dollars, at market exchange rates) when
purchased from the mostly useless European distributor.
The real sad part of this is that, due to the weak dollar, US goods *should*
be real bargains these days, but greedy middlemen are soaking up our
competitive advantage!

Subject: StyleWriter Cartridges (A & Q)
No need to pay $25 for StyleWriter cartridges...ust refill the one you
have. Buy a bottle of ink (not India ink), a bottle of 70% isopropyl
(rubbing) alcohol and a big (cow-size) veterinary syringe. The syringe cost
me 80 cents locally.
Remove the little rubber plug on your old cartridge, suck up 9 cc of ink
and 3 cc of alcohol into the syringe (ratio is non-critical), and inject
the solution into the cartridge. Re-insert the rubber plug, do the
cartridge-cleaning button sequence on the StyleWriter, and you are go for a
couple of hundred pages.
You can also use colored inks, but I had to print about 100 pages of solid
printing to get the residual black out of the cartridge. Now I have a red /
pink cartridge!
That takes care of StyleWriter cartridges (for the original StyleWriters,
at least). Does anyone have info on how to refill H-P DeskWriter 550C color
cartridges? Exact color match is un-important.

Subject: System 7.1 - Excel 4.0 & more than 20 fonts
Hi folks,
While upgrading our MAC Lab for the semester's crop of students, I found
that Excel 4.0 didn't want to work.
I upgraded a client to System 7.1 -- it diligently moved all 50 fonts
into the Fonts folder and removed all the old stuff; as it should. I
rebooted the MAC and everything worked as normal except Excel 4.0.
(NOTE: MAC refers to an se/30, se, or LC all having 4MB ram. I tried it
on them all)
I called Microsoft to ask about this on Monday and the technician
hadn't heard of the problem. He was quite helpful though. On tuesday, I
reformatted a hard disk reinstalled Sys. 7.1, Excel 4.0, EtherTalk,
and my few INITs. Excel worked marvelously which made me happy. However,
I only had the standard 9 fonts in the fonts folder. As I added fonts
>From the original disks, I noticed that odd things happening with Excel
(I added 2 fonts at a time because I thought that fonts had something to
do with this!!).
Of course, I called Microsoft yesterday and got a friendly tech. that
had heard of the problem. He basically siad that they were aware of the
problem and that Fonts came into to play. Microsoft is currently
researching this difficulty and promised a call back.
This note is more to save some of you aggravation; assuming that you see
or have seen the problem. I have thought of using a suitcase 'type'
utility, but really don't see a need to buy for short term use. I would
greatly appreciate a note if you have seen this problem.
